timing ? was created by stonemaster
I got my overly heat sensitive new digital timing light to work and i got my timing readjusted but I had to rotate the main plate damn near all the way forward to get the marks lined up on 1 & 4. No more room for adjustment, OK for now but the future >>>>????

This may sound dumb, but is the point gap correct? If small you will need to advance the plate.

Set the Dwell angle/point gap first. Clean the points first with clean paper or cloth, + oil free solvent.

Lubricate the point cam felt gingerly.

Turn the engine over by hand until the 1-4 points are at thier widest. insert a .4mm feeler guage.

loosen the 2 point base screws and the point will rest against the feeler guage. tighten the screws back up, making sure that the gap doesnt widen.

Repaet for 2-3 point, then recheck. gaps should be around .35mm after this procedure.

Then set timing.
@ 0 degrees on adjustable digital light, engine should fire exactly on F mark @ around 1000rpm.

After adjusting points for over 25 years I got smart and bought the dyna, set it and forget it. I could never justify the cost, when points are dead on the bike screams. But in time the performance would diminish and time to readjust. Points are cheap after all compared to the dyna. I put a dyna in last year and loved it so much I yanked the points out of my 650 and put in a dyna ignition and coils. I must say well worth the money in the long run. A dyna might not be for everyone as far as cost but after 25 plus years of dicking with points its well worth it......... My 2 cents

Could it be that your light is off? Does it have a built in advance function, knob on back with a scale, or if digital a setting for advance. If so was it at zero when checking? If it has this it could be miss reading. Have you taken it out for a ride yet?
Also there are some posts here with converting to the Kawasaki electronic Ignition, cheap and readily available.

When you set them statically how far were they off with the light?

I think the light just popped on, is your advancer stuck in the advanced position? You said you rotated all the way forward, I'm taking that as clock wise looking at the plate?

I'll bet your advancer or advancer springs are messed up. Guess how much time I wasted learning that.....

As the advancers age, they no longer hold the weights fully in at idle screwing up the idle timing set point.
