The pickup coils on the Kawasaki’s with the factory supplied electronic ignition can sometimes fail or become intermittent due to heat and vibration.
1.Trace back from where the pick up coils are mounted,(under a right side CD sized cover) locate and disconnect a small 4 pin connector. Using a multi-meter set on OHMS and range of X 100 check between the BLUE and BLACK wires(#1 and #4 sparkplug wires) for between 360- 540 OHMS.
2.For #2 and #3 sparkplugs the wire colors will be YELLOW and RED, again 360-540 OHMS.
3.If the pickup coils are suspect of failing due to heat, they can be stressed using a hair dryer without the need of the engine running.
4.A replacement set of pickup coils might be obtained from a dealer who serviced the police Kawasaki’s.
5. If replacement pickup coils are not available, your next choice would be to order a Dyna “S†electronic ignition system from www.z1enterprises.com It replaces the IC igniter with a smaller module located where the mechanical ignition advancer was mounted.
6.Check the small 4 pin connector that the pickup coils connect to for corrosion/loose pins too.

It's nice to see they are still available and could influence people to build Loudhvx's version of Kawasaki's IC Igniter system.

Never Mind. I'm a DORK. It would help if I was reading the right scale on the tester. It is analog and not digital. Now that i am reading the right scale they Ohm out at about 460.  I guess I scored two sets of good pulsing coils for $18 a set. Not bad I guess.
Time for new "auto-ranging" Multimeter.

Believe it or not but for certain things i really like an analog scale. Especially the very low resistance measurements. I still have a very nice old meter that has a 3.5"x4.5" scale for when I want to use one. I love to use it for measuring all kinds of coils such as low impedance fuel injectors, Ignition coils and such. Hay, I might be a Dinosaur, but I'm a Tyrannosaurus Rex

I just had them priced at www.kawasaki.org (the website for Beartooth Kawasaki). OEM price is listed at $139.05 with membership it's down to $118.19

I am going to build a three pickup system for my KZ1300. I bought new Nology Mini Coils for it and I would like to try something a bit different. I have two extra ignition modules for it but I think that Loudhvx's module might be quite a bit better. The Nology coils are 2.4 Ohm but are designed for 3 Ohm Ignitions. Figure that out!

The key word there is "certain". Not all 3 ohm systems are the same. What determines the system's dwell requirements are the resistance and the inductance of the primary. It could be they adjusted the inductance on that coil (increased it) so it charges at a rate similar to the specific 3-ohm system they are referring to.
I use a 3-ohm coil on a system designed originally for a 2.3 ohm coil (though they usually measure about 2.4 to 2.7 after 30 years). I guess 2.4 and 3.0 are close enough that in some cases they can be swapped. But that may not be true in all cases.
Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes a resistance is specified, but not because of the dwell characteristics, but because of what the output transistor can handle. I think the Dyna S is an example of that. But the proper way is to match the coil's current-saturation time to the system's dwell time (which varies with RPM, usually) to make it efficient and running cool while still getting the best spark.
BTW, very nice score on those pickups. This is not an easy time of year to get deals on parts. Good to see they're still out there.

I'm a Baaaaaaad Boy. I just scored another one for $18. This time complete with thee Magnetic plate. :silly:
When I talked to Nology on the phone they recommend the coils on all the PRE 81 ignitions but not the "J" series 2.2 ohm ignitions. They do recommend them for the 1300 which is a 3 Ohm ignition. Do you think I will be OK with the GM modules on the Nology coils than? You can take a look at the PDF catalog and they make specific bike and year recommendations.

Here is what the Dyna mini coils look like. They must only be used on systems where the dwell is properly matched for them. Notice how small they appear.
