i just installed green dyna coils and i am getting spark but i think my timing may be off or the points arent set correct. ive read to check the timing i can make a timing light with a light bulb using 2 wires and aligator clips. one clip to ground and the other to the spring inside the timing cover for the cylinders to be tested. once the "f mark is lined up for those particular cyclinders for instance 1&4 the light bulb should light up. the problem im having is ill have the timing light for cylinders 1&4 but it lights up when the "f" mark for cylinders 2 and 3 is alinged. can someone help me check and adjust my timing please

should the points for the particular cyclinders be open when the corresponding f mark is lined up?

Set the gap first to see if that helps

Dont get ahead of yourself. After the gap is set then you can get the light to fire on the "F" mark. Set1-4 first then set the 2-3 that should get it to run so you can use a strobe timing light.

gap has been set. when fully open the gap is no more than .016.

What kinda bike you working on? On the 900/1000 .016 is on the high side but still within spec.

78 kz 650b. i justed adjusted to the lowest tlerance being .012. i think it may be a fuel issue. i tried turning the engine over with the throttle wide open hoping this would cause the plugs to get wet but there bone dry. im stumped

With the throttle wide open, your just blowing off the plugs.
If you want them to get wet, put the choke on full, and dont open the throttle. They'll get plenty wet! :laugh:
Timing points can be a huge pain. Make sure that the points themselves are perfectly flat and clean, very clean.

When viewing points: set at 9 o'clock should begin opening when F mark for 1/4 aligns with case timing mark; and set at 3 o'clock should begin opening when F mark for 2/3 aligns with case timing mark.
With opposite results, points cam is probably installed 180 degrees out.

it does appear the points cam is off 180 degrees. when i line up the f mark for cylinders 1&4 and then slowly turn the engine over the points for 2&3 start to open. i just dont understand how its off 180 degrees now since it was running when i last put the bike up

Can you take some close up picks? Did you even mess with the lobe or remove it for any reason?
