Kz750 Ignition on a Kz650 was created by anakinkenobe
Hey all i have a 1978 kz650, i swapped an '80 750 motor in it and was wondering if i can keep the 750's ignition and what other parts i would need and how to hook it up..
Thanks
Jason

Is the 80 motor electronic ignition? If so you'll need to keep the pick ups (on the plate where the points go for the 650) as well as the advancer from under that cover. You'll need the igniter from the 750 ignition as well. The pick ups will plug into the igniter and the igniter will plug into the coils along with the 12v hot wire that feeds the coils. Should be a piece of cake.

I believe tyhey will. kawi OEM coils designed to work with points run about four Ohms, I think the ones they made for electronic modulse were more like three Ohms. You can drop a four Ohm coil into a system set up for a three Ohm coil and it should work no problem. The reverse is not always true.

There is a chance the points coils will work with the electronic ignition, but the electronic ignition uses a shorter dwell, so hotter coils may be needed to work at higher RPMs. If it revs through to redline at full throttle in gear, then they should be fine. If not, then you may want to look at 3-ohm Accel coils or 3-ohm Dyna coils, or 2.2-ohm Dyna coils, or even new-old-stock 2.4-ohm Kaw coils. It won't hurt to try the ones you have.

The igniter is the little electronic box that connects to the coils and the pickups which are under the points cover. If you don't have one, you can make one:

Hey all i have obtained an IC Igniter from an '80 750, wired it in according to a step by step i found and i dont believe i am getting spark so i guess i might as well opt for the dyna ignition just so i have no question as to what i am doin...

The Dyna will work better with the stock 650 coils than the factory electronic ignition would, anyway.

What ignition are we talking about? Points, Kaw-electronic, or Dyna?

There are many things that can cause you to be 180 degrees out. How do you know you are 180 out? Are you getting spark now?

Stock 750 ignition will have a pointer that points to the pickup with the black/blue wire when pistons #1 and #4 are near top. The right hand coil will have a black wire going to it and will connect to #1 and #4 plugs. The left hand coil will have a green wire to it, and will connect to the #2 and #3 plugs.

The rotor in the pickups can go on in either direction.

Get a multi meter and turn the crank with a wrench to see when the coils are firing. This is often referred to as static timing which can be done with a multi meter or a timing light. I have better luck with a multi meter since I also know if my coils are getting 12 volts. There are two wires that feed the coils independtly. Place one multi meter on one and the other on the engine ground. Do this for each one. I wouldn't try starting the bike until you've done this...

what setting does the multimeter need to be on? is it the wire end or the end where the plug wire is?
