What I have for wiring is as follows. Coming off of the 1978 motor, 2 yellow wires and 1 green wire with a red stripe. Wiring still on the bike 1977, one green wire with red stripe coming off the bikes wiring harness. The old rectifier, which is located next the gas tank has 3 yellow wires, one black wire, and one white wire. The points regulator (1977) has one black with a yellow stripe wire, and one brown wire hooked up to it.

Those two go to the two yellows on the new reg/rec.

That wire comes from the neutral switch.

That is from the neutral light. That should connect to the neutral switch on the 78 motor (as mentioned above).

The new reg/rec will connect to the black wire and the white wire. The three yellows should have gone down to the old 77 motor. If they are good, you can use two of the yellows to go to the two yellows on the new motor, or you can just run new yellow wires (preferred) and yank out those three old yellows.

There should have also been a green wire which went down to the old 77 motor. You can leave these disconnected, but tape them up as the brown wire has battery voltage on it when the bike is on. (Remove the regulator, obviously.)

I'd appreciate it if OnkelB can confirm all of this, as I'm going from memory.

As usual Lou is right on the money. As he says your old regulator should also have/had a green wire (middle prong if I recall correctly) - this is the power wire for the field coil in the 77 alternator. Since the 78 alternator is a permanent magnet type you no longer have any need for this wire so no need to worry about it.

I am still amazed at the level of expertise that the memebers of this forum possess. Everything sounds correct, I am going to look at it after my afternoon class. Loudvhx and OnkelB are masters of Kawasaki KZs, thank you.

I hooked up the reg/rec the way that loudhx stated temporarily, and it is throwing a spark. The problem is that it is throwing spark to only one coil. I tested the wiring leading to the coils, and it seems alright. I'm going to go to the Dyna website and see how they say to test 3 ohm coils. Does anyone know where I can buy just one coil, preferably used.
