HI, Plug!
Just wondering if you managed to resolve your problem with the starter.
I have a 1982 KZ440-C3 (Frame Nr KZ440C-005830) and it doesn´t have a starter too.
I´ve been looking allover the internet for a replacement but several issues come up relating to the starters compatibility... I cant seem to find one that is exactly the same as mine: MITSUBA SM-8203; 12v 0,6kw.
So... because I cant fine one exactly like mine and because a new one from Japan costs more than the bike itself here in Portugal!... I start looking for compatibles.
Do you have a list of models that share the same starter? Does anyone have it?
I already understand the early models have 2 brushes and the later have 4, but will they fit in the same place? I need to be sure to make a buy through the internet... Returns are difficult since I sit in Portugal
I´m getting a bit desperate... I want to start rebuilding my KZ but will not until I'm sure I can get the starter for a reasonable price.

So.. can Anyone help me ?!?
I would me most grateful .
Diogo

Most electric motor rebuilding places can rebuild these. Have you tried:http://www.cyclewareables.com/pages/street_startermotor_repair_kits/startmtrkit.htm

Well as the site says:
ANY METRIC STARTER MOTOR CAN BE REPAIRED (EXCEPT FOR EXTREME DAMAGE FROM FIRE OR STRUCTURAL CORE DAMAGE... And mine unfortunately has structural core damage... if u can call it that...
In simpler words the magnet cylindrical plates that are supposedly glued to the inside of the armature are just NOT THERE! They suffered complete disintegration somewhere along the line and I still remember cleaning bits of it from the rotor some years ago...
So no rebuilding kit for me...
Or... does anyone think otherwise?!?
