Yes, the combo units from Z1 are the way to go. I didn't look at the difference between the two that Patton listed. Is it just a connector difference? or is there a difference in the wiring?

But the combo reg/rec allows you to eliminate the seperate reg and rec units. I just don't know how plug-n-play they are (for mounting etc.). Someone will chime in.

Whereas the $90.72 version doesn't have the connectors and requires wire splicing, here's the $108.99 version which includes connectors for an easier installation. The biggest problem I recall was having difficulty holding the unit in position under the battery box and keeping the holes aligned while getting the attachment screws started.

Rectifier/Regulator Combination Unit KZ1000 KZ900
PM81-4081

OEM: 21066-025 99996-1159 21061-024

Bolt-on replacement for the stock regulator & rectifier. Solves the problem of overcharging batteries. Simple to install - NO CUTTING OR SPLICING OF WIRES. Fits Kawasaki KZ1000 (77-78) KZ900 (76-77)

You will need slightly longer mounting bolts as the new unit is a little deeper. Remove the existing regulator & rectifier taking care with the bullet connectors. Bolt this new unit in the place of the old regulator (under the battery box). Plug the green connector into the electrical panel, connect the ground wire to the engine ground point (behind the kickstarter), connect the one wires normally going to the rectifier into the double female connector on this new unit and you are done...

Good Luck! :)

TL, that last pic of yours of the genuine NOS Kwak item is definitely a regulator ONLY...
it needs a separate rectifier unit to work properly.
KZ650C2 Stock/mint. Goes by "Ace".
H2A Built from a genuine basket case. Yes,it's a hot rod.
GT550A Stock/mint. Pleasant stroker.
