Did a search, no relevant answers. . .

Search was "fuel light"

Problem is the thing comes on and goes off at random intervals.

Tank can be full, empty, or anywhere in between.

All i know for sure is that the light works.

Too well.

Thanks in advance.

Just a thought but I'd look @ either the sending unit or a short to ground in wiring.

Yeah, my '78 has the light in the tach, but my bike doesn't have the sending unit. Tank was swapped by previous owner.

Regarding the problem, seems like there may be a loose wire, or a sending unit issue.

learn something everyday, i have a B model. i would look for a wire either shorting to ground or becoming open, if it is a light with no gauge it should be pretty simple to figure out.

This answer might be irreverent.
TAKE OUT THE BULB. LAY IT ON THE FLOOR. STEP ON IT.
There. That should take care of it.

empty the fuel tank and take out the sending unit. light sandpaper the string of coiled up wire and the slider contact.

or clean the corrosion off of the two contacts under the plate which hooked to a float.

either way you have some corrosion on a metal contact. could be either type of assembly.

Well, golly. . .had the tank off anyway, due to throttle cable replacement necessity.

Pulled the sender, and there was all kinds of sediment which looked like it might have been the culprit.

It wasn't. (drat, double drat)

It's a solid state unit, with one wire going to something that looks like a bitty water tower, and the other wire going to a tall rectangle.

It's still available at the dealer for $90.00.

If that's the problem.

I guess tonight I look at a schematic.

Don't have to be at work tomorrow.

I got laid off today.

Rumor has it that motorcycle fuel gauges are rarely accused of being accurate, even when new.

Good Luck! :)
