I've just received a new after market japanese electric tacho for my z650 hybrid, problem is that the instructions are in japanese.
It comes with RED, BLACK and long GREEN wire.
I'm assuming the RED is positive ( to the 1:4 coil YELLOW/RED wire ). The BLACK to the 1.4 coil BLACK wire, and the GREEN to earth,
I stand to be corrected
cheers

perhaps that should be RED to power, BLACK to earth, and GREEN to coil 1:4

The wire colors are meaningless. You likely ground the tach via a separate wire you stick in yourself on one of the connectors; such as a bulb connector. One wire will power the tach, one wire will power the tach light and the other to a coil. I suggest you fab a ground and run a wire from the red, black and green to a 12V source, like your battery and see what lights.

Which wire activates the stop lamp? ;)

Seems like you'd need more than 3 wires to function properly. Unless it is as George suggested--that the tach needs to be grounded to the frame separately. Then you've got one wire to power the lights, one to power the brake indicator, and one going to the ignition. Does that sound right?

I should have explained earlier that the lights all have there seperate wires (blue & black). It came with bulb plugs as with the original so i'v just pulled them out and used my existing bulb plugs.
I already have a brake light in the idiot panel so I removed the bulb plug and taped up the hole.
So that still leaves me a RED, BLACK and Lonnng GREEN wire to power the tacho from the coil:unsure:

I'm going to try putting the BLACK & RED to a power source in the headlight and run the GREEN of the 1:4 coil
