The FSM for '73Z1-'76KZ900 contains four diagrams. The 1st diagram is Z1 US model with green wire from right-side points to right-side coil feeding inner plugs 2/3 and black wire from left-side points to left-side coil feeding outside plugs 1/4 (correct). The 2nd FSM diagram for Z1 European model is the same.
The FSM then errs in the 3rd diagram (shown above) for KZ900 (US and Canada model) which erroneously has the wire colors reversed from the points to the coils. The same color combination is shown for the KZ900 European model in the FSM's 4th and final diagram (which is likely also incorrect).
The FSM Supplement for '76KZ900LTD also erroneously reverses the wire colors from the points to the coils on both the USA and Canada model diagrams.
This is consistent with the info as posted by wg.
P.S. The FSM for '77-79 KZ1000 also looks wrong, at least for '77 and '78 (before pickups and igniter) and I'm guessing the FSM's '79 diagram for European models showing green wire from igniter to left-side coil and black wire to right-side coil might also be wrong.

...was surprised to see this factory diagram for the 76 900 A4:

Diagrams have been known to be wrong, but this is sort of a BIG error...Here's what I see on the diagram:

They may have switched sides for the coils at some point, or at least on the the other model lines. The 550's have:
1,4 black-wire coil on the right side (fired by left pickup).
2,3 green-wire coil on the left side (fired by right pickup).
This is based on looking at actual bikes (about a dozen or so. (I have one 81 model which wasn't touched since 1986.)
But the manual for the 550 shows several diagrams with the coils swapped left and right, but black always feeds the 1,4 coil and green always feeds the 2,3 coil. Also the pickup on one diagram is shown with the blue/black pickup on the right and the yellow/red pickup on the left, but this is absolutely wrong.
I guess my point, then, is that I don't think we can imply the physical layout from the wiring diagrams. But, we should be able to imply spark plug numbers when they are written in, and wire colors. (In that case, the 76 900 A4 diagram I showed is wrong either way.)
If only Kaw would have stuck to one convention and then drew it the same each time...

So I corrected my copy to this.
I don't know if it's worth it to upload it to the filebase. If I convert it to PDF, it doesn't look as good as this Jpeg.
This is just a blow up of the coil portion.
