some 78s came with electronic ignition!ive still got my dads first 78 a2 he bought it in 79 it had a factory electronic ignition on it i know this for a fact it also came with an ltd front mastercylinder,ltd seat and kerker header,bought from the origional owner with 60 miles on it.it was sold by the old bluffs cycle in council bluffs iowa this was the way it came delivered from the dealer!its far from stock now,just waiting to be freshened up but the 75 z1 is getting built first!

coils have nothing to do with output of charging system

I don't doubt the dealer may have added all this stuff, but it didn't come from Kawasaki that way. When you look at the parts fiches it doesn't give an option for electronic on late production 78s, ect. 78s had points.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

it was a kawasaki part they must of been installing them on something in the middle of 78,i wonder if it was some early 79 parts they got a hold of at the dealer it also had some ltd parts installed from the dealer.

I too, suspect that the parts may have been dealer installed. The B model was the better seller than the A model and in 1977/8 Kawasaki was starting to get some serious 'black-eyes' from reliability issues with its motors. The dealer that I frequented in the late 1970's had all types of Kawasaki manufactured parts for cosmetic upgrades. At that time, there were some general recalls on early model Z1000's that had to do with tuning problems, cam chain problems, oil leak issues, etc., etc.. I suspect that the dealer may have 'up-graded' to help push the model off the floor.
