"Smoothbore" carbs are VM29's or VM33's.

I've also got a '78 KZ1000 and, based on my research, it seems like the VM 29's (which were the go-to for extra HP back in the day) are now rare and expensive. A set of RS34's can likely be found cheaper, and will give a bigger boost while requiring less fiddling.

As always, I defer to the input of the many members of the forum who know way more than I do about these machines.
Is this thing working? Is this thing on?

Unless you want your bike time period as i did with mine Z1. I have the VM29 pumper smooties for several years now and the bike performs very well.

You have a set of 29 Smoothbore with accelerator pump option. Very cool. I have a set of 33SB with pump bowls but I don’t think the linkage is complete. Mine were bored out. One day I’ll rebuild them.
