I am looking for a source for the  OEM  fasteners used on the kawasaki kz1000.
Does anyone know the pitch and threads per inch used on the 1977 kz 1000 a1?
thank you

What are pen fasteners?

Have you checked the parts diagrams at Partzilla, Kawasaki or CMSNL? They often list the size and pitch of threads.

The OEM fasteners are metric.  Pitch will be in mm, such as 1.25.  They won't be spec'd in TPI.

Even the dealer price manual doesn't list fastener thread pitch, only dia. and length.

Thread pitch gauges are common & inexpensive, and an invaluable addition to a restoration hobbyist's toolbox.

Many fasteners are still available from Mama Kaw - for a price.  They might not be cosmetically exactly identical to the 1970's OEM pieces, but will fit just fine.

If you're in CONUS, Fastenal (www.fastenal.com/) has pretty much everything you might need for less than OEM.  Willcall for pickup if you have a local branch to save shipping.

I am fine, though it is a bit chilly here this morning. Most of the fasteners are still available from Kawasaki. Your local dealer or online dealers like Partzilla, CMSNL, and such will have them. If you are not worried about having genuine factory parts, any good hardware store will carry most of what you need.
As noted above, Fastenal is a very good source for fasteners of all sorts.

EB = evilbay.

As mentioned, bolts will be available through several different online stores. Partzilla, CMSNL, Kawasaki.com will have parts breakdowns. Find the item number and go shopping. Keep I’m mind as Slmjim says, some will be superseded numbers. Meaning they will be functionally correct in fit but not period correct. The head might have a different stamping or missing a stamping. If you want period correct bolts you will need to find a print version of a parts manual and get the original part numbers. You can have your bolts blasted and re-plated.

Replating your original fasteners is a viable option.  I've done the "send them out to a plater" and "plate yourself with a Caswell's kit" option on different projects.  I'm in the later camp these days, although in truth, the initial investment is not trivial.  Having the setup at your disposal is invaluable for guys that "forget" that one odd piece that looks ugly and needs a refurb.  For that you can get a cheap kit from Eastwood too.

If you're doing a restoration you should look at these guys.

www.japanmotonuts.com/

Most of the screws on a KZ1000 are 6 mm 1.0 pitch.  Same for the bolts.  There are some M8 bolts, a couple of M10 bolts and a couple of M12 bolts.

There are a couple of 5 mm screws as well.  I think the handlebar controls and the signal lights.

If you can find a copy of John Brooke's book on Z1 restoration there is an excellent section in there on Kawasaki nomenclature for their nuts bolts and screws.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

If you're doing a restoration, buy one or two hardware "lots" from a similar bike off Ebay.  Send that, along with your own hardware, to have replated.  I sent in 3 1/2 bikes worth, with axles, adjusters, etc. cost 75 bucks.
Buying from Kaw will make you go broke.

I LIKE YOUR IDEA
I TALKED TO A LOCAL CHROME SHOP AND HIS PRICES WERE HIGHER THAN BUY NEW FASTENERS
I AM INTERESTED IN HEARING MORE ABOUT HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO FIND A PLATING SHOP THAT WAS AFFORDABLE
DID YOU CLEAN THE FASTENERS AT HOME FIRST ?

WHAT PROCESS DO YOU USE TO CLEAN USED FASTENERS?
THANK YOU
GREG
