I have one good one off a 78...I believe they all fit the basic KZ 1000 models until you get to the J models.  $150 plus shipping from 98110  Let me know.

The 79 and 80 are the MK2 engine, and have a different number of teeth on the crankshaft cam chain sprocket.  I believe you could use a 73-78 crank in a 79/80, but you'd need to change the camshaft sprockets to the 73-78 sprockets.

The cam chains are not the same, unfortunately.  The chain used on pre-MkII motors (Z1, KZ900, early KZ1000) having the 15t crank center pin use 122 links.  The MkII chain is 124 links.  Hope this helps.

I read somewhere that the rotor for the stator-generator is different due to the crank being larger and the taper is different is this true?

This may prove to be a bigger pain than I thought. The dynamo charging systems are different, you would have to get an earlier side cover and complete rotor assembly. 77-78 uses a magnetic rotor dealio fixed to the crank and the armature is fixed to the side cover....while on the later 79-80 Mk2 motors the dynamo charging system is reversed.  I would totally understand if you didn't want the crank, my apologies
