Looking for a "numbers matching" set of cases for my Z1-R having frame number 002824. Would consider a complete engine if the price is reasonable. I have a great running Z1-R engine now but I recently realized that the numbers are too far off to be considered "correct". The engine is about 1600 lower than the frame. Thanks!

I'm not sure where the engine is from but it was in the bike when I first bought it 15 years ago. I checked to make sure it was a "D" serial number but didn't even know then that the numbers should have been closer.

Your engine number is correct for the 1978 Z1R so it may be the original engine even though there's a spread to the numbers. Take a look at the link below. Notice it shows for the 1978 Z1R:

1978 Z1000-D1 Z1R FRAME NUMBER: KZT00D-000001 >ENGINE NUMBER: KZT00DE-000001

Then for the 1979 Z1R it shows:

1979 Z1000-D2 Z1R FRAME NUMBER: KZT00D-017501 > ENGINE NUMBER: KZT00DE-017501

So given that info, your engine number is correct for the 1978 Z1R. I know that for most KZ bikes the engine numbers and frame numbers very quickly varied, and some varied quite a bit. Ed

Yes, correct for a 78 Z1-R, but after looking a little more into the history, the Z1-R's have much closer numbers than the other 1000 models. In the Z1-R collector world, this is not a numbers matching engine. I'm hoping I can eventually find a set close to my frame number to have on hand.

79MkII - I still have two sets of "spare" KZ cases from back in my drag racing days. Turns out one of them is from a Z1-R (unbeknownst to me until now). Took a pic of the serial number - KZT00DE018363. It's probably even farther off than the one that you have now. I started stripping the black epoxy finish off (not knowing what I had, unfortunately) way back and remember what a PITA it was. Also, I'm pretty certain that I still have the crank from this motor. I recall that it was a bit of an "oddball". I thought that this was just a typical MkII motor, but the crank was not a standard MkII. Can't recall what the differences were. I'll have to look through the shelves and dig it out and give it a look.

And, I believe also that the reinforcing ribs on the front of the cases are also different than the MkII. At the time I thought that this was some kind of transitional motor that was supposed to bridge the gap from the early Z1/KZ to the MkII. If only I knew at the time....

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for that info 79MKII - greatly appreciate it! And, yeah, those cases will be going up for sale, along with a few other items, a little later this year once I find some spare time. Would be nice if they went to a good home.

I see that there's a set of Z1-R cases on eBay right now. S/N KZT00DE001875 for $400 (plus $110 shipping - ouch!). Looking at the pics, it appears as though the main bearing cap for the crank has been milled flat for an APE reinforcing plate - could be a good thing, or not. Makes one wonder about the history of the motor. Maybe this serial number is closer to what you're looking for?

Thanks again.

Yeah, I think those cases have been down the drag strip a few times. The numbers are closer, but not close enough. Thanks for the heads up though.
