Yes you may experience some ticking.

I never like to see a valve in a KZ 900/1000 motor tighter than .004" lash, no matter what cam is in the bike.

.004IN with .006 Exh is a pretty good setup.

Ill agree with this setting 100%. I had set my 650 to these specs after changing the springs last year and have had NO problems or noise. You should run the exhaust about .002" looser than the intake because they will tighten up a bit after running.

To LARRYCAVAN I have a 650. I was just commenting on the difference in georges explanation for changing shims.
1979 KZ SR650, stock candy persimmon red and crossover pipes
1981 KZ 1000LTD with non stock and more comfortable handle bars and 4 into one V&H

10-4 on the 650.....thought it was a 900.

I'd still follow the same guidelines.

You might try doing a very careful carb synch and see if it helps the ticking situation.
