valve lapping compound? was created by 77KZ650
from all my reading about lapping valves, i can only confirm that it comes in coarse and fine. i cant find any specific details on this, are there more than just the 2 kinds? also what brands make it, and where can i get it? (local shop?)thx

It is available in different grades just like sandpaper. IMHO coarse is only needed when there are pits in the face of the valve or the seat, otherwise I use either a medium grit or fine grit.

I use a coarser grade and it seems to work fine. Some valves take a while to lap, espescially if they are nitrided. A fine grit may be frustrating there. I guess a smoother surface would not pick up carbon as easily but opinions fly around here so maybe someone else can shed more light.

Hello Scott:

The brand I have available to me (down here) is VersaChem and comes in a blisterpak with two small tubes (coarse and fine). There is more than a single brand. As for availability, the store front that routinely sells it here is O'Reilly's Auto Parts...I don't have any idea who might carry it in Canada:S

The stuff I use is named "Clover Compound"
Use it like sandpaper , start coarse and finish with fine .(yes I do know it gets finer with use)
I use 2 marks a lot markers RED for the seats and black for the valves to see what I'm doing .

Does anyone else use the fuel line on the valve stem trick instead of those dumb cup tools ?

Talk to me about this...I get the concept and I do own the 'lapping' tool. The special tool does work but it's kinda a pain to use. :)

Just stick the valve in place and slide the fuel line (or any appropiately sized rubber hose) over the end of the valve stem. It does require the head be supported above the work surface, or flipping the head repeatedly.

I just use the suction cup.

You just hang the edge of the head off the bench cc up .
Mark your valves and seats with markers .
Put on a dab of compound , drop in the valve .
Slip on a piece of fuel line onto the stem .
And do your lapping motion pulling DOWN with the line between your palms .
If you pull to hard the line pulls off the stem (safety)
You can do an 8 valve head in just minutes .
Plus , you can see what you are doing without that tool in the way .B)
