NEW BATTERY WON'T START THE BIKE was created by aquaholic
OK guys, 1982 KZ1000J,  got a new battery a year ago 310CCA. Charged it and it won't turn it over enough to start the bike. A car battery rolls it over fine. I did rebuild the starter last year and haven't used it enough to wear it out lol. Engine is tight after a rebuild. Any ideas where I can get a higher cranking amp battery without giving up my first born child. Any other thoughts as to what is causing the problem are always appreciated.

Did you have the Battery load tested? the  battery could have gone bad after a year,
my battery is about a year and a half old and it is junk. I have also been looking for a new battery ,and have not seen anything with a larger cca then what you have.

I load tested it and it appears to be fine. Starts out at 12 volts and drops to just above the bad line lol. Maybe I should just get another one. I hate throwing money away

Charge it fully then connect a voltmeter red lead to battery positive and black lead to the positive terminal on the starter. Operate the starter and Let me know what you get ( should be no more than 0.5v)
Also connect across the battery with the voltmeter, what is the voltage static and what does it go down to when you operate the starter (should be no lower than approx 9.5v to 10v when cranking)

Where did you get the battery? The ones I've gotten from AdvanceAutoZone have stickers on them to indicate the purchase date: I went to return one that was bad and it was actually still under warranty, which was a pleasant surprise. Maybe yours is still covered, or at least prorated so you won't have to pay full price for the new one (depending on how the test goes in the store).

You should be ok with with 310CCA.
The stock battery is only 235CCA.
How did you maintain the battery?

OP,
Is your battery a wet storage battery (conventional or AGM), or a LiIon battery?

LiIon batteries lose an increasingly significant fraction of their cranking power the colder they get,  because the internal resistance of LiIon cells increases as temperature decreases.  A quick & dirty way around that is to turn on the headlight(s) for a minute or so, then turning it (them) off and cranking again.  The current flow powering the light(s) warms the battery internally a little, reducing internal resistance of the battery some & allowing it to deliver increased current.  This has been fairly well documented on the Honda ST-1300 forums, possibly others.
