>>> "You knows folks I'm pretty new at this. I've only been working on bikes for 40+ years. Be nice if I could get an answer to a simple question instead of all sorts of other information that isn't helping or assumptions of idiocy like when I say it has an extra plate"
So you want numbers do you ?
Well, why didn't you say so ?
I'll give you numbers
A 73 to 76 clutch has seven steel plates .091" thick, 7*.091 = .637"
A 73 to 76 clutch has eight friction plates .150" thick, 8*.150 = 1.200"
.637 + 1.200 = 1.837"
I have no clue if 73 and 92 clutch is the same, measure your plates.

>>> "(for example I've haven;t measured the slave throw under pressure yet"
Your problem indicates the clutch is not releasing, there is a good chance the rod is not pushing far enough.

He did. In the very first post of this thread. In fact, that is all the post says. He was even so specific as to mention that he wants the number for a J engine clutch, so he still has no answer.

To the op, in defense of the wordy, not well-focused responses, folks around here sometimes are so eager to help that they do not read the initial post carefully enough, and the majority of new members are newbies with limited abilities to diagnose or clearly articulate a problem. This leads some folks to offer common suggestions for what they think the newbie may have meant, thus the kitchen sink approach that sometimes completely misses the mark.

Yes, that is a bucket full of assumptions, and you know the old saying ......

The first post is very clear and to the point, and is still unanswered.

Partzilla says …

9- friction plates
8- steel

Web search says steel plates are 2.3MM thick.... 8 x 2.3mm = 18.4mm
friction are 2.9 to 3.1 so 9 X 3.0mm = 27mm
18.4mm +27mm = 45.4mm if I'm doing math correct... here in the states we don't use MM as our first form of measurement... and I'm an Old School carpenter...

Thanks!

Measured stack height is 45mm . Within 1% of theoretical, so stack height isn't the problem.

I think in the end, this may be the deal. Measured the push rod movement under load and got 2.7mm.

While doing the measurement, noticed the plates want to stick together. Picked apart the clutch pack is freer, but still very high drag. Bike tends to sit, so the oil may be getting driven and drained from between the plates making a draggy arrangement worse when the plates stick together.

I have a extra plate clutch in my bike with zero issues. BUT I use a stock cable clutch mechanism .
Noting else is stock , but the cable system has work great all these years.
I almost went hydraulic , but it is low on my list.

Have you sorted this problem yet?, I have the same problem with my z1000J . the clutch does not slip and the 9 friction and 8 steel plates measure OK. But it has clutch drag when the lever is pulled in and almost impossible to select neutral . I am thinking mabe its adjustment , but I have adjusted as per workshop manual but cant get it right. Have even adjusted too far but no better. hope you are having better luck.
