And to the real pros on this site, I fully expect you to admonish, degrade, or otherwise ridicule me if I'm giving bad advice at any time or if you just disagree or have other suggestions.

I don't have any feelings that I'll get butt hurt so have at it.

Best,
Rob

yeah I'm not sure what to mechanic actually did because he definitely did not replace anything I think he just cleaned the carbs. I went through them again and there was a little bit of dirt but it did not improve my situation. I have been searching for a way to check the float height on these bikes but I haven't found much except for the clear hose method. But I don't understand how I can fill the carburetors since they are vacuum fed. I can use the prime switch but then I also run the risk of putting too much gas in, correct? Or do I just let the carbs prime to they flood to check float height? Any ideas?

If your floats are off then you are already at risk of that.

The floats don't sound like the issue so much because the bike idles good, starts good, runs good for the most part.

Somebody has this bike with a similar setup. I wouldn't reinvent the wheel. Copy their setup. Do a search. Some other forums might help. It's all fair game, you need to ride

That's a fast bike. Had a young carpenter working for me years ago that had one. Excellent carpenter with a very promising future. He stopped by the job one day and said, "take it for a spin", I laughed and said, Nah. Maybe another time.

A bit later a helicopter was landing in a nearby field air lifting him out to Albany Med. He didn't make it past a few a weeks. Shame.

Maybe if i had taken it for a ride then it would have been different.

Be careful, these bikes started to get real fast but they did not incorporate the same advances that today's bikes have.

I don't mean to b e preachy but, yeah, well, maybe I do.

Be safe.

I have one more question about the plug chop. Do I take the bike to a straight away, pull over then put in the new plugs? Or can I put the new plugs in, in my garage and then ride the 1 minute to the straight away? Or will that taint my results? I just want to make sure I do it right. I warm the bike up with the old plugs in it, right?

And I am sorry to hear about your old carpenter, that's a sad story. Yeah the bigger motorcycles tend to put a fear in me that keeps me from going fast.

Has a thought this morning about the diaphragm s in the carbs. Have you checked them to see if they are okay?

The diaphragms in the carbs are in excellent condition with no cracking or tearing.

did you see my last question about the plug job? I got some new plugs and I am ready to try I just want to make sure I am doing it right. Also I just looking at my spark plugs they all appear to be rich so maybe my floats are the problem? I have my mixture screws at 2.5 turns out. And further inspection of the Pod filters reveals that they have never been oiled it seems.

this stumbling at high RPM's really made me think there was a lean condition and it was lacking fuel. However my spark plugs tell a completely different story as they are saturated and very dark to almost black. My bad tank whistles when I come to Stop also. Maybe not venting enough? I guess it has to be with the spark plugs looking as they do.

Sorry, I’m out on the road, I’m thinking the jets are too big.
