Hi,

I have a 1981 z750L and I have seen that the head gasket has started to leak on the sides, not much, but I have a feeling it`s coming more and more during the summer. So I was thinking maybe I shall replace the gasket under the block and also the piston rings when I first have the top off? I have never tested the compression on the motor, but it runs find and I have enough power...

What do you think?

IT SURE CANT HURT. then you know the whole top end is fresh. I would not use anything but a factory Kawasaki base gasket. I had lots of problems with the aftermarket ones. would also recommend new valve seals and inspect the valves/seats. this would be the time to check everything. make sure you note where each valve shim came from too.....its a pain figuring out where they belong when they get mixed up. keep the shim with the same bucket too.

Thank your for taking time to replay to me.
1. Gasket under the block
2. Top gasket
3. valve cover gasket
4. piston rings
5. new valve seals

Is it more I need to check the cylinders itself?
spring for the valve?

There are various other O-rings and seals you need including (but not limited too):

Cam chain tensioner gaskets and seals
Tach drive seals
O-rings on cylinder studs
O-rings on oil transfer passages
Piston pin c-clips

OEM Kawasaki gaskets and seals are the best. One exception (maybe), a lot of guys have good success with aftermarket viton valve stem seals.

1. O-rings:
All the O-rings is circle shaped? I have a set (397 Piece Metric O-Ring Assortment), all kind of o-rings, so I hopped I could use them?

2. Tach drive seals:
Where is these located?

3. Piston pin c-clips:
These is a part I should replace when I first have it open? just in case?
It`s the clips holding the pin from not going out and the piston will get loose?

4. Piston Rings:
www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/...780+H1%29/parts.html
Looks like it`s two types to my engine? how do I know what I need?

5. Valve seals:
www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/...780+H1%29/parts.html
Witch parts here should be replaces valve seals? are we talking about item 10?

Thank you all for taking time to looking into these and help / assist me.

You might want to take a gander through the various various top end fishe pages and take note off all the various O-rings and seals. There are several, many of which I highlighted. I'm too lazy to dig through the fishe for you and provide part numbers. Sorry.

I see, I will read the workshop manual also the diagram and try to collect all the parts I need to order.
It would be perfect is someone can verify it after :) I will try to divide up the scope to valve and block, easier see if I`m missing something.

The cam chain idler has rubber dampners that have certainly turned to stone. Furthermore take great care when you remove the head as there are four dampners, two front and two rear. They love to fall into the oil pan during removal. If they do, you get to add pulling the oil pan, cleaning the mating surfaces and installing a new pan gasket to your list. Part number 92075 in the link below.

A couple empty egg cartons are a great way to keep track of the valve parts. Number them, put them back in the place from which they came. i.e. exhaust vale one goes back into exhaust valve one. No mixing locations. Refresh my memory, what is driving the need to replace rings and remove pistons?

Thank you for inputs.

I need to change the top gasket during the winter season, it`s leaking, and I was thinking maybe it will be good to also change the piston rings at the same time.. The engine running fine, but I don`t know how many miles it has and when things was replaced last time. I have good time in the winter, so changing the piston rings are not expensive.. and so why not? You think it wast of time and money?

The top and valve, I was not thinking doing anything with them, but then TwoCam advise me to replace the valve seals.

So I was thinking making a winter project, replace the piston rings and go over the top and check the valves and replace parts who has wear and tears?

Not a good plan?

Here are some of the parts you need. I'd check ebay for cheaper prices on the head gasket and various more expensive parts. Kawasaki rolled the head gasket part number a bunch of times and you can find deals on some of the older part numbers.

Your mindset and attitude is right on. When you get someplace hard to get to, take care of everything in the area. That said you can get to a point where you create a problem you don't currently have now. If you choose to replace the rings, you really should hone the cylinders first or they are unlikely to seat properly. Providing there isn't cylinder wall damage this is something you can do with a drill motor and a ball hone. A ball hone is not an expensive tool. $40 plus or minus a few bucks. I would recommend inspecting the cylinders once removed and make a call at that time. Post some close up pics of the cylinder walls here and the experts can assist you in making that decision.
Others, please chime in with your thoughts on my suggestions to this noble warrior.
