Those parts look pretty good to me. All of the cams and caps (across maybe a dozen motors or so) I've seen, haven't looked any better. It is just surprising to me that the journals would be below their limit. If they are, at least the wear is even. That being the case, I wouldn't expect the cams to be so noisy.

It also occasionally shift out of gear for 2nd under heavy load. A neutral can also be found between 5th and 6th gear, soon after it will slip into either.

When it was new, my 750 twin used to frequently find a neutral in between fourth and fifth gear. I would shift into fifth and let the clutch out and it would not be in any gear (engine rev). Then I would shift again and it would go into fifth with a CRUNCH.
