Agree, Starting to sound like the chain and sprockets, keep in mind that the gear shaft is still driven in neutral and the engine off but that's easy to check by seeing if there is ANY play on the shaft by push sideways on the sprocket,

First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, 1983 fully recon motor fitted LOVE THIS BIKE
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as FJ above)

No play that I can tell in the sprocket. Checked that out. I keep messing with the chain and its rubbing on the chain guard. It's being weird. Anyways...

So... I guess I will start checking things off in order as soon as I get settled starting with the wheel bearings and chain... then moving on to the gearbox bearing.

Thanks for the help guys!

Dodgy chain and sprockets when bad you can hear just rolling the bike along at walking pace. If the difference between the 'tight' spot and the loose part of the chain is a lot that is a good indication too. Chains often wear unevenly, with a tight spot.

Agree with Tyrell Corp. except I would put the bike back on it's center stand, remove the sprocket cover again, and run the chain through by turning the rear wheel by hand. As soon as you see and hear the chain contact the chain guard your search is over.
Good luck.

Want to scare yourself some time? Put the bike on the center stand, start the engine put it in first, second then fifth gear at street RPMs and watch your chain slap all over the place!
If you have a bad chain, you will see it do all kinds of ugly stuff.

At about 3500 starting hearing a terrible metal on metal grinding at about 30mph. It doesn't increase or decrease with revs and remains pretty constant... but goes away coming down at lower speeds.

I am thinking it cannot be the chain if the sound remains constant above 30 mph. I am leaning towards wheel bearings or trans bearings,as Ed mentioned try to isolate the direction of the noise.
