Ed's suggestion is very good and should be the first and easiest thing to check............but my money is on the advancer, as well as lubing the arms and making sure all is OK in there do not neglect to check on the return springs........I suspect they may be weak, hung up or even broken. Your stated progression of the problem leads me to think that is where the issue lies.

A hanging idle typically means the air fuel mixture is too lean. Most likely cause is an air leak. The cause can also be related to idle mixture adjustment but that seems unlikely with VM carbs. Spraying carb cleaner or the like around the outside of the carbs in an attempt to find the sourse is an unreliable method since it only shows gross leaks, not minor leaks which can cause this problem. The note about Pods being installed throws a red flag too. Pod filters drastically change the carb jetting needs so hopefully this has already been sorted out or you are going to have to do extensive retuning.

Would also assure integrity of the rubber caps (aka plugs) that cover and supposedly seal the four vacuum nipples on the four carb holders.

If one or more of the plugs is defective or missing, it creates a major vacuum leak.

All excellent suggestions! No expert here, but during normal operation, at startup on full choke, my bike bike will rev like a sonofagun (depending on ambient temps) a few seconds after initial firing unless I progressively lower the choke...usually 1 minute or so after start, my choke will be completely off...(Unless very cold out, in which case, it might take two minutes...But it still needs to be progressively lowered/turned off...Just a thought!

Same here.

If not already done, kzdcw should assure that the choke is fully shut off -- choke lever pushed completely down -- and that the choke lever is staying down and not lifting on its own accord due to whatever reason such as engine vibration.

There should be screw with a friction washer that helps toward holding the choke lever in position.

Here's a similar example.

A double cleaning of the low circuits using Patton's method and a new set of carb holders did wonders for mine. Good idea on the holders. ;)
