2nd gear slip? was created by SeattleKZ
Somewhere around 5-6k rpms my 2nd gear slips. It is only 2nd, all the other gears work fine. I put in a new clutch hoping that would help but did not. It just slips for split second and then engages and runs the rest of the way just fine. Anybody else ever have this problem? Know what it might be?
This is in regards to a 1976 KZ900

most likely dogs on 2nd gear rounded off  or possible shift fork. ........rounded dogs force gears apart...... it's a common issue of missed shift of cramming the tranny back in gear :S .....

Is that something that can be done without splitting the cases?

Most likely the transmission gears are wore. This is most common in second gear. Easy to see when you get them out. There are not a lot out there with perfect gears after all these years, they all have some degree of wear. You can take the oil pan off and its not easy but you can get a look at the gears. You'll be looking on the output shaft for the 2 gears closest to your sprocket. They should look like these but they get rounded on both sides of the gears.

you can do shift forks without splitting cases.....but it sounds more likely you have bad dog/gears................. :S

Where do you access the shift forks?

you have to remove the trans cover behind sprocket and have the oil pan off.......... i'd just drop the pan first myself......as it's more likely you have a 2nd gear issue

Same way, with the pan off. Most times the forks are worn from trying the keep worn gears in place. So most likely the gears go first then the forks.
