timing advancer
08 Jul 2014 16:57
Need some more learned eyes...first one of these I have seen...I have a miss at higher rpms...noticed some fairly substantial deviations. Pic one shows difference between raised lower area and section that pokes through points plate.(off center from one another) Pic 2 shows wear from overhead.( note non-concentric top of "tube") bike has 28k on it...is this wear normal/acceptable?

The wear looks okay but I am far from an expert! More of a novice. All I can tell you is I would dismantle it, clean it and lube it. I believe you can buy replacement pads but that would not effect top end timing. If I remember right, anything after 4-5K in the RPM range is fully advanced. I personally took mine apart and polished the parts clean and smooth. Then I coated the crap out of everything with heavy duty silicone spray. There are other suggested lubes but the silicone spray dries and does not attract dirt like oil does. reassemble and make sure everything moves freely.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK THE SPRINGS WHEN REMOVING THEM THEY DO NOT SELL REPLACEMENTS. Although I have read here that Chevy distributor springs are the same size and spring rate.
Hope this helps

It definitely looks a little cruddy! I am concerned about the eccentric nature of the surface the points' blocks ride on, relative to centerline....would think it has some pulsing effect ? ill certainly clean & lube as advised if conncensus deems part worthy of further use. Thanx for the feedback, as usual!

Not excitement, believe me! More sarcasm...seriously, the coils are a month or so old...kinda vested now...more to my OP...does the part NEED to go in the trash can? Thanx again!

Keep in mind that you are looking at a little cam so it should not be concentric with the shaft. That does look like a good bit of wear. Obviously maintenance was neglected. I would take it apart, properly clean and lube it, lube the felt pad that keeps the cam surface lubed (and should have been lubed as part of normal maintenance), install new points & condenser and give it a try. And if you decide to go electronic, get a Dyna S. The black coils will work fine with it, and it is a lot cheaper than the Dyna 2000, which is really for drag bikes.

I concur with koolaid_kid.
Could consider a new Dyna-S ignition system, which should be okay with the same coils designed for a points ignition.
For example, if the coils are 3Ω or 4Ω, they should be okay with Dyna-S.
Lots of us kept using the original coils for a long time after replacing the points ignition with Dyna-S.
Dyna-S has its own rotor and permanently replaces the points system.
Good Fortune!
