engine stuck overnight? was created by jason289
Hi all I have a 1978 kz650b.

I have kicked this bike over over 100 times while not running. The bike has not run in a long time. so i know the pistons are not stuck, transmission shifts through all gears.I took the kick gear out and it is not binding(put it back},electric start is not binding.spark plugs are out.engine has 21000 original miles on it.I was just finishing my electrical work when i went to kick it and now it wont move after about a week..Electric start wont move it either. The only thing i can think of is my buddy was kicking it over with the sprocket cover off, could the ball bearing behind the pusher fall and get stuck?I was ready to fire this thing up for the first time and now all the sudden it will not move.Im hoping this is not a complete engine failure but the engine has never run so im hoping it is something minor.any help or suggestions very welcome. I'm too far along and too much money spent on this bike to turn back now.

Almost sounds like the kick start is jammed up.

Is there any chance something could get into the cylinder or intake runner? I have found mice and their findings in cylinders before.

Just some thoughts –

With the transmission in neutral and the bike on the center stand try turning the rear wheel to ensure that the tranny is indeed going into neutral and that there is no binding of the drive chain. The rear wheel should turn freely.

Assuming the rear wheel turns freely with the tranny in neutral, try putting the tranny in 1st gear and see if you can turn the rear wheel. If nothing is bound up, with the spark plugs out and the tranny in 1st gear turning the rear wheel should turn the engine over.

remove the spark plugs and see if it will turn over...... sounds like the cylinder is flooded (1 or more). petcock left on , bad float needle/seat. incorrect float level............. you can't compress a liquid ....

Pull the plugs then put it in gear and try pushing it.

We are missing part of the story, like maybe cam chain tensioner removed? Or something similar.

agree, sounds like a flooded cylinder, turn engine over with starter and make sure the plugs are out

thanks everyone for all the suggestions,The bike does not currently have a chain on it so cant turn the wheel to make it move,I never had the motor apart so nothing is amiss there and just rebuilt the carbs never had gas in them.I tried cranking on the sproket bolt itself with the bike in gear,i got nothing.I don't want cause any more damage by forcing anything. Is it possible the ball bearing at the end of the clutch push rod came loose and got stuck some where?Retracing my steps that is the last thing i was working on {when i took the old chain off}when it still kicked over.i removed the kickstart shaft to make sure it wasnt caught up there{put it right back} clutch basket does not move while in nutralI was going to dissasemble the clutch plates this weekend.still scratching my head.

You should be able to isolate the crank/ cams from the gearbox by pulling the clutch in (assuming thats working). With the clutch in you should be able to turn (with a spanner) either the crank or the gearbox (use the sprocket nut). Let us know how you go.
As for the ball bearing, it can only drop out if you remove the clutch spring hub and push rod actuator.
