Oil Passage Blocked ? Or IS IT !!!!!

During inspection, I noticed this. The oil hole on upper case base is covered by the base gasket.

The gasket imprinted or sank into the oil passage galley and could have been restricting oil flow.

Couldn't really see any top end damage. The cam bearings were within spec at .032 to .038 and the cams measured out ok with no loss of lobe material, shims and buckets were ok.

There must have been adequate oil or just dumb luck.

Should the gasket be put on as it is sold? or should the gasket be cut to open flow?

My thought is it should not be trimmed or the gasket would come that way?

I don't see any reason why it can't be cut back if you wanted. It's not sealing against anything so it's just along for the ride is all.

Ya, just wondering why Kawasaki did it that way?

I just wonder if cut, will it cause a leak on the back side?

The way it sunk into galley really bothers me though.

NORMALLY Its ok, the oil comes out of the small hole and then gets pushed under the gasket and up the stud to the head, you can cut the gasket but there is no need
BBBUTTT looking at your gasket it should not be pushed down blocking the oil hole so good thing you caught it in time.
The first item to suffer would be your camshaft bearings, if they are ok (no scuffing on the bearing surface) everything else should be ok.
Just looking on the edges of your gasket it looks like your gasket is wrinkled??? what compound are you using to cause that?? normally the gasket does not drop into the cavity. I suspect you need to look at the compound that "melted" your gasket.

Not blocked, every big kz I've had appart is that way. It is another good reason to dry block it.

Thanks BOZO, but it was a Wiseco gasket provided with my 1105 kit.

I put it on dry with no chemicals and don't use any additives in my oil.

I use Rotella 15w-40.

When I pulled the cylinder, the gasket stayed with the top case and it had no wrinkles.....and took 2 to 3 hours to get off......... :blink:

Not every one, but yes. The OEM gaskets are better then aftermarket.

although I can count the number of times I had the Z1r apart on one hand, I have not seen a base gasket that bad, the gasket was a bit sloppy / sagged but never to that amount, I know wiseco supply good stuff but I can't help looking at the wrinkly parts and wonder that something is not right.
As stated before I did have a known brand base gasket which just started falling apart, so I had to remove the barrel/ head extra to fit a new one (I used a genuine gasket this time - dry) and it appears ok (I won't know till it goes apart next time?).
Lately I have been concerned about the quality of gaskets supplied because my friend also had his gaskets wrinkle up and appear to swell, is there something in the new oils?, I don't know maybe someone out there might have an answer.

I will send these pictures to Wiseco and ask them what the deal is.....

Will report back with what they say.
