Ignition advance removel was created by gdprather
I have searched and haven't really found any for sure information on removing the ignition advance from my 1983 kz1100 Spectre. I was wondering if I remove the bolt and pulled the advance off will I have to worry about timing or does the advance go back on one way. I am powder coating the covers.

I think there is something on the archives about something similar to that maybe another forum, It's googleability is astounding. you would have to get another ignitor box from what I understand I think from a gpz.

From the The GPZ Modification FAQ

The 1984-85 900 Ninja has a 35 degree box with no rpm limiter (box # 21119-1111) that I use in the race bike. The 86-87 1000R Ninja has the 35 degree box "with" the rpm limiter at 10,600 rpm ( box # 21119-1165 ) that I use in the street bike. THESE BOXES WILL ONLY FIT IN THE 83-85 GPz750 models and work the same other than one having the limiter.

The 86-87 1000R Ninja boxes can be made to fit the 82 and "earlier" Kz/GPz750. But you'll also need to get the large "single" plug with 6" of wire attached that mates with this box.

So, this mod replaces the mechanical advance with a electronic version. I am assuming that in order to put it on a KZ750 you would ALSO have to toss the mechanical advance and pickup coils and replace them with ones from a GPZ (single plate and trigger) along with the Ninja IC Igniter box. Correct?

Is there something I am not seeing?

I am sorry if I did not make it clear. What I am trying to do is just remove the mechanical advance off the crank so i can powdecoat the housing. I was just wondering if I unbolt it from the engine if I would have to deal with resetting the timing or will the unit just slide back on?

ok, let me get some reading glasses, sorry. I don't think it would be a problem. being a 83 it should have electric ignition not points so no it is not adjustable as far as I know. just make sure you don't put it on backwards.

Make note, or mark with a "Sharpie" where it goes. If you forget,re-install it and try to start the engine, if no fire, you're probably 180 out, so remove & install correctly.

Remove the center bolt(maybe a 12-13 mm)and then slip the advancer off the end of the crankshaft. You might have to give it a slight twist to clear the slots where the advancer weights go, but it should come off easily.

Ok I put a 12mm socket on the center bolt and a wrench on the 17mm and I could not move it at all. Well seems as though it may be moving very little but comes to a stop. I dont want to break the bolt.

Is that bolt a right handed thread?

Yes it's right handed. Tap it with a hammer, try and soak it in a 50/50 mixture of acetone and auto trans fluid overnight, then tap on it a few times before trying to turn the bolt.

You don't want to break that bolt, it goes in the end of the crank.

Might even try a few gentle taps on a hammer impact (hand held kind you smack with a hammer).

Put a wrench on it and knock it with a rubber mallet. A impact is really the trick but hitting it will work too.
