Kz1000 ticking, knocking, and burning?

26 Jun 2012 12:12
#531871
My 82 kz1000 started ticking or knocking inside the engine. Starts of low but when giving it gas it speeds up. Might have been low on oil so I put a little in and now it smells like oil or grease burning. Does anyone know what this could be?
that's a video so you can hear what i'm talking about. Please help.

Could be the valves are too tight or the timing is off.
There's worse scenarios...but these are usual on motorbikes.

bump for mas help!

First thought is valve adjustment. Does the bike get regular maintance ? Do a oil and filter change and try it again. Then let us know. Dont run it hard until you at least that done

I gave the bike an oil change about a month ago. When I checked it yesterday the oil was looking a little low. At first I thought if I put a little oil in it the ticking would go away but it didn't. Haven't checked the valves yet.

I got $5 says you bent a valve or spun a rod. If it is, hope it's the bent valve but I'm leaning towards rod.

Exhaust leak can also make a horrible, mechanical sound so make sure there's no leak between the headers and engine.

Retract on rod knocking, just seen it's a 1000, I thought it was a 750.

do a compression test (dry) then (wet) and see what is going on

its hard to tell with that muffler set-up

could be a cracked ring that would be your burning

Did the noise start before or after the burn out in your picture? :woohoo:
