Not sure how proper it is, but a bottle of Techron and some plastic scotch-brite pads are my weapon of choice.

I don't have a proper valve spring tool, but if that's the only way, then I'll add it to my shopping list (I've learned the hard way that the right tool is usually 90% of the problem solved).


You may not want to remove your valves, but replacing valve stem seals and checking valve guide wear may help you on your quest to solve the smoking cylinder.
