when i took my sprocket cover off i put the shifter a little to high when i put it back together causing the shifter to hit the alt cover and not letting it shift into 2nd gear. you might have done the same thing i did.

Topper wrote: Hmmm... Yes I did. I had removed it (and the sprocket cover) to do a little aluminum polishing. But then I rode to town (about 45 minutes on the highay) without incident and it shited fine.

It was only after sitting in town for a couple hours that suddenly it wouldn't shift.

I thought that might be what was going on, but the shifter appeared to clear the alt cover just fine.

Send in the clowns-theres got to be clowns-dont bother they're here.

I'll happily acknowledge my status as a complete and utter noob, but I hope I've not degenerated to the level of clown. Although breaking down twice in one day and getting stranded on the other side of town certainly made me feel foolish.

Trying to do what I can about the noob status slowly but surely. I appreciate the help.

Permanent and perpetual noob.

Some times it helps to not only be moving but to have the oil up to temperature and add a few more revs into the equation.
I really doubt that there's anything wrong with your bike.

The reference to the clowns was not aimed at you Topper but rather the member who made the off topic post.

I'd like to remind folks, one in particular, that posts are to be on topic in the tech forums.

No worries all. The bike seems to be shifting now and I've moved on to the electrical problem that came up once I got it shifting.

well Topper I started reading this thread cause I just started having the same issue with shifting. When you pulled the sprocket coveror clutch cover off , is it possible you disturbed or disconnected the wires coming from the alternator, cause it sure seems funny that all of a sudden your battery went dead, and thiose wires were in the area you were workin in, I hope another simple fix for ya.

I thought the same thing. But it turned out to be a fried connector at the regulator.

Ok I guess its safe to highjack this thread then, goty the same issue with my 750, drove to my daughters went in and visited a bit, hopped on the bike and all I got was first and neutral, wouldn't go into second, was a mile from home, and it did shift into second and got thru the gears once on the way home but not since. I've removed the sprocket cover, sprocket and shifter cover, and so far the only thing I've found was the circle clip on 4th-5th gear shift fork rod was not in the slot on the rod. Like Topper it seems odd that I would have problems when it drove fine for several miles.

well I put the clip back in place, and reassembled everything, not sure why it would effect 2nd gear but it seems to have solved the problem. Bike shifts fine now.
