I'm sorry about a my previous post i got a little bit out of order.
I'm not sure where you got that I was telling him to waste a lot of time and money. I wasn't telling him to get any old turbo, the turbo i was refering to was a mitsubishi td04-09b. which is just about a close as your going to get to the correct sized turbo with out spending lots of money. MHI claims this turbo is good for a 750, so most likly it will work on a 550, it might not spool very early but it would work. Now looking at the airflow requirements of the bike, I calculated that with 7psi of boost the bike would need about 150cfm or 9.9 lb/min of airflow, which is right in the 72%efficient area of the turbo. This also equates to a hp potential of 99 horsepower. It will probably make more like 75. As far as making a turbo header, i would say that probably the eaisiest part of the whole deal. you take a stock exhaust cut the primaries off it, make a flange and weld them to it. Granted there will be a lot of cut to fit, and tiral and error, but in a project like this i would assume you already know this. I'm not sure about the oiling system, i have never looked at a 550 that much before, so the owner is on his own there. My suggestion about the snowmobile carb was also well grounded, i suggested an old butterfly style carb with adjustable needle valves becuse they are far eaisier to tune than playing musical mainjets, and there like a 5 dollar item. As for an intake, that can be made from some copper pipe fittings, sure it may not flow the best, but it dosn't have to.
I'm not guaranteeing that this thing would be a record setter or even look good. but with a little work it would be a very useable turbosetup that would probably embarass quite a few of the new sportbikes.

Hey if you want a half-assed attempt at building a 75hp turbo from a 550 just buy a Suzuki XN85...

Argue all you want, that's fine, just do it nicely

The XN85 was called that because it made a claimed 85hp. It was more like 70-75 at the wheel, and although it was nominally a 650 (actually 673 i think) it was developed from the chain drive 550 not the shaft drive 650. Unfortunately for Suzuki the plain old GPz750 made 86hp without a turbo!

Lorcan, it's nearly 10:30, go to bed, you've got to get up in the morning. Or is Falmouth on a different time zone?
