I have a problem...

I am putting my 1975 Z1b back together, and am at the point of timing the cams.

The problem: The exhaust cam doesn't have any marks where the manuals (I have two!) say there should be. :side:

See this thread for the a pic of what is in both of my manuals:

Any tips/help anyone?

I suggest taking a close up picture of your cam sprocket and then posting. Should be marked, the guy's here will tell you which mark, just post some pic's.

No pic?
Have you ever used a degree wheel?
You have the manual that should tell you opening and closing degrees for each cam, its a bit tricky the first time.

Well i see a straight mark in your pic about 11 o clock, but I think you may be looking at the wrong side, the marks are on the bolt head side.
Can you see the slot in the end of the cam? This should be the Ignition side/ crank timing marks.

I see that slot... I was trying to do it "by the book" (see link above)

The book shows timing from the 'non-BOLT-head' side with a 'mark' on the cam sprocket.

I remember doing my 400 by lining up the notch in the end of the cam... I suppose I'll put it together and see what happens when I roll it over with a wrench on the crank bolt.

Nope, no degree wheel. I've never used one, but I'd like to get one as I've been building engines a lot more often nowadays :silly:

Non-Head side?
Not sure what that means.
But if the cams have the Notch in the end of the shaft, then using the pic's here or in your manual you should get it in the ball park, then I believe you should see that the straight mark should line up with the valve cover surface, ex cam at the front and intake at the rear. Still need to be the right # of links, and there should be a DOT or Triangle for this, along with a IN stamped next to it. I can't tell from your photo's if those are even stock cams. If you get a good pic up of the whole cam, someone might recognise the manufacturer.

The straight mark doesn't really line up, at least the one in the rubber, there are actually a few of those straight marks that are hidden by the shadow in my pics... [edit] Or did you mean that notch at the end of the cam?

The "head side" would be the side with the bolts in it.

There is a "28" and an arrow on the intake cam sprocket, so that is all good.

One more pic to follow...

Yes the notch in the end in that last set of pic's 1st 1, those should be made into both cams, they face out in the same direction. The 28 on the intake, lines up 28 teeth in the chain from the ex cam mark, which is still where you are having a question, right?
