Are you talking about a KZ (F1) or an LTD (E1)? On my KZ the inner pipes are permentaly connected to mufflers. Both outer pipes are slip fit with gasket and clamp same as cross over pipe.

If yours is the stock 4 into 2 it should be the same design as the diagram shown, only the head pipes are crossed. The 650D from 78 and 79 has the same pipes as your 650E. I don't remember if the D and E head pipes all four come loose from the mufflers, or just the outer pipes come loose from the mufflers.

The exhaust on my 78 B model looks the same as that diagram. The mufflers are welded on. You will have to cut them off, and any replacement muffler will need to be clamped on the pipe or welded. If you need clamps and muffler adapters check JC Whitney.

Why would you want to remove the mufflers? Your bike will run like crap without any backpressure. Ed

If existing stock exhaust system is in decent condition, might sell for enough to purchase an aftermarket system deemed more suitable. Or perhaps a trade might be possible.

Good Fortune! :)

My '82 KZ750-4 is the same setup. I think all the Kawa 4's were that way in that era. Solid to the two inside pipes and removable outer pipes. But why? Did it make it easier to R&R the system?
