there aren't any o-rings between the oil galleries on the 900 or 1000 early models that didn't start until the j model

Not true.
All my z9 and some of my 1000 heads (eight of them) have 'O' ring grooves around the outer rear stud holes, some later 9's and 1000's don't depending on year. And neither of my J or GPZ heads have them at all ??? .All from UK bikes.

The later 18mm pin bikes did not have the "O" rings the 17mm" pin "J" bikes had the "O" rings. I have never seen "O" rings on the earlier bikes and I have never seen a headgasket have provisions for them. They all had coper seals on those studs and are ambidextrous.

Luck must be on my side today. Just checked the torque again. Started it up and low and behold I don't see any leaks. Had me scared there for a minute. Hopefully the oil on the gasket doesn't comprmise the seal. I'll Keep my fingers crossed. Thanks all.

For the record, all the 750 twins seep oil at the head gasket near the front. You'll never see on that doesn't have the "scum track" around that area going back. The factory gasket did, the first rebuild OEM did, and so does this third one. A tiny bit of seepage may be normal (?)
