Difference in horsepower specs? was created by saltydog
While looking on the specifications pages of my shop manual, I see that the 1981J is rated at 102 hp while the K and M models are rated at 92 hp. What are the differences in the engines? Is it all in the cams? If it is in the cams, what does it take to use an electronic tachometer, as my M model has a gear driven tachometer?
Thanks,
Robert

The cams and the carbs are different. The j carbs are jetted richer and have a coasting Enricher diaphram the k and m dont have. The J cams dont have the tack drive gear so your tach stock tach wouldnt work.
Hope that helps

OK, I think I am getting closer to the answer I need. I checked the Kawasaki parts diagrams an see the differences in jet sizes. What happens if you change the cams and main jets but don't have the coaster valve?

Your ltd has the electric tach, his csr has a cabled one, so if he went with j/gpz cams he would lose the tach. Id just get some aftermarket cams before you go through all that hassle..

When I built my bike and installed a 84 GPz head on the engine I also lost the tach drive. If you use an electronic tach like I did you will not have a problem. I just switched to a later model tach which I bought on eBay for $40. The carburetors only need re-jetting and different needles and just install cams of your choice. I would go with a set from a 83-84 GPz1100 which you can get for next to nothing on eBay. I have seen them for as little as $25. What I would do is to use the later model intake cam and use your intake cam on the exhaust side. In this way you will gain a lot of low end torque along with the HP increase. I mixed and matched cams on my bike and it flies.

No -They are ZN gauges. Are you sure it is the gauge and not the float? I have replaced two floats in the last year, because of the same problem.

I may have a spare mechanism set for the fuel gauge if you find that is what is wrong with yours. You might just have to swap out the face plate because the one I have is very badly faded. I MEAN REALLY BADLY.
