Need Ideas: Custom Exhaust was created by KZBobber
I have a 1980 KZ1000 LTD Bobber with the stock 4 to 2 Jardine pipes. I am wanting to get custom pipes fabricated for it that are shorter and possibly turnouts. I feel that the stock pipes are too long for the bobber look I have going on this bike. Also, these custom pipes will be wrapped in black exhaust tape/wrap.

Would appreciate any assistance with ideas or also pictures that I could use as an example. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunatly I have no advise about the custom exhaust, but I must say that I am a fan of the wrapped header look. I also like the Kerker look, but have had thoughts of buying a used header, wrapping it and attaching some kind of different muffler or custom pipe. So count me in with KZBobber on this one. What do you guys have?

KZBobber...I'm in the exact same boat. Except right now all 4 pipes are chopped at the headers. I'm looking to add on a little length and also get some sort of turn out. But, I want to make sure that I have the appropriate back pressure too. Anyone have any experience?

Here's a repair/custom fabrication with good technical info.

Yet more about exhaust header pipe dent removal, including the following excerpts:

find a ball bearing that is just abit smaller than the inside diameter braze a chunk of wire rope to it and then pull it down to the crushed part of the pipe then heat the pipe up until it is red hot at the crushed part then pull the bearing thru it repeat on the next headers it will work very well keep the pipe red hot while your doing it.

try the ball bearing trick it works awesome i've never seen anything even come close.

Am still gun-shy about heating a plugged pipe to cherry-red. Seems too much like a pipe-bomb that might explode by bursting out somewhere else besides one of the plugged ends.

Does anyone know what the stock exhaust on the KZ650 is made of? I'm planning on welding on some custom pipes, but I'm not sure if the stock exhaust is made of stainless steel or just chrome plated steel. Has anyone had any experience welding on their own exhaust...if so, did you have any trouble bonding whatever metal type you used? Thanks!

It's definitely just chrome plated steel.
