I always thought the transmissions were the same too. Look at Kawasaki parts lists and all the gears on the A2 are the exact same part number as the MKII. So I think we have a slight difference of opinion. I looked at 2 sources, the modern CD parts list and also the old microfiche cards from 3/82. All gears have the exact same part number unless I'm losing my mind which is entirely possible.:)

Unfortunately you can't go on part numbers. Kawasaki often changed part designs during a production run. This is very visible on Z1's where 100+ parts are different on the early bikes, yet the part numbers are the same. For instance - the rear brake hub went thru 3 variations (without any wear indicator panel, with using a decal, with the lettering cast into the metal), yet they all have the same part number. Replacement tanks for the Z1 had the KZ tank design (with the seam underneath to the outside of the tank), but the original part number. Chain adjusters - some were chromed, some were zinc'd.

Shame on Kawasaki - they should have used the Honda style part numbers where the last three numbers are revision numbers.

I thought z, kz ,mk11 gears were the same too. just dif shafts.
i got a whole trany from MURDOCH RACING ENTERPRISES, (MRE) and they back cut it for me and recomended, and supplied a billet 2nd gear, for my 1327 motor. he never mentioned a MK11 as an option. he could have supllied a MK11 if it was better, he has many spare parts for all KZ's.

i had a z1 sline crack at the end where the pin goes.
as for the best trany. That would be the GPZ modified to use in a KZ.
The KZ baskets are better than the GPZ.
