The oil pickup is towards the front of the pan and that one has the normal pickup blocked off and a new pickup at the back of the pan so it won't starve for oil under hard acceleration.

That is what I figured too Mark, problem is that under hard breaking and with the oil viscosity thin, the oil pressure light will flicker and come on. I wonder if there is a better alternative or if its possible to modify one of the tubes and have it drawing from the front in addition to the rear.

An extreme solution but you can buy swinging pickup sumps for modern bikes like Busas, that way there is always an oil supply at the pickup. I moved the oil supply line for my turbo to the rear of the sump from the front for the same reason though as it was killing turbos on acceleration.

The sheet metal screw is a nice touch.

Wheelie machines have those. Not just for acceleration but one tire stands too. Seen it done before, for bikes that have more mileage on the rear tire then the front:blink: . I've also seen poeople braze them which leads to spatter. In turn travels throught the engine wasting every bearing and surface. I would check the whole engine for bearing damage.

how about just putting a trap door in the oil pan to keep the oil around the pickup on the oil pump.its been a common trick on z-motors as long as i can remember. goodluck,happy wrenching!

Thanks wireman: do you have a photo or can you elaborate more? I have noticed that to do this mod the previous owner has filed down the casing supports between the oil filter housing and the exterior of the sump to allow the tubes access to the rear of the case. This, I guess, is going to exacerbate the sloshing of the oil away from the pickup but in turn allows it to return forward quicker.
Shields and flaps are common on aircraft oil systems so I know the principle will work.

i dont have a digital camera to take picture of what it looks like,check with APE Jay,or their website im sure they probably stock them you have to do a little work on the pan to make it fit.it swings closed when accelerate to keep oil around oil-pump .i sent a pm to jeff at z1 maybe he can elaberate on this a little better than me.

It's a good idea when done properly, but that's a little scary! I had mine done is a similiar fashion years ago with no problems. Mine was professionally welded though, no sheet metal screws and black gunk! The aluminum tube on mine bends down toward the ground and goes into a "deep sump" that was added to the pan. This increases oil capacity and keeps the pick up in oil under almost any condition. I'll try to post some pics if I get it apart anytime soon.
I would recommend the "trap door" and another used oil pump.

Here is a photo segment that schnitzracing.com had for the trap door. We use them in all of our dragbikes, and they work great, and best of all, they are very cheap!
