Yes I used to think the same way but the bike loves a little less restriction than stock baffle but certainly more than open pipe and the cops love to hear open baffles. Sure when you are riding around at 3am coming home from a long ride your neighbors will love it too. No doubt about the fact that open baffle is faster on the highway once you are moving but I could feel quite a difference between no baffle and comp baffle so I don't need anyone's opinion to guide me I feel the difference. Between stock baffle and open pipe I would do open pipe. No doubt besides it just sounds much meaner that way. But the cops......

By the way my comp baffle is not a vance and hines baffle and the hole is bigger. When I run it at WOT it certainly sounds like an open baffle but when I run normal it sounds mean but on the quiet side of mean like legal mean. It's still way louder than the stock baffle. Just the ticket to avoid the fuzz. I will post a picture of it if you like.

I would politely like to disagree. I have been gassing these bikes ever since i started riding to get them to run better than stock.

The first thing i do is remove the restricted mufflers and install headers.
The next step would be to jet it up to match those headers with the packing removed.

And when we use to do a lot of street racing jet it up some more so you could run open headers.

I agree normal street riding would benefit from some restriction but the way i use to ride would not be considered normal.:woohoo:

I really have calmed down in the last year. No one around here rides kz's and i don't have to one up my old friends that would try and wring everything out of these bikes. Roy

i had forgot about measuring the baffle until last week when i was installing some jets. The end measures 1 3/4 inch. I started looking at the baffle and it was restricted quite a bit.

I then found another old kerker baffle. The one that looks like a aluminum cone. I cut it down so it would fit About three inches into the tip. I also cut "v" shaped notches on both ends so it would flow better.

I drilled a lot of holes in it and the sound is not as loud as the wire mesh type with the packing removed. Roy
