Kick start question was created by mzandmz
I cant figure out how to kick start my 77 KZ650. It has a cluch lever switch. But you dont want to have the clutch pulled in to start it or it disingages the engine from the kick starter. What gear do you kick it over in and how do you keep the bike from moving forward? I am a real newbee and a little slow.

The clutch lever has a safety switch you have to open to be able to use the electric start function.Squeezing the lever will have a spring loaded plunger move out closing the start circuit.

It's a safety device like I said above to prevent cranking the engine in gear.

Doesn't neutral put the transmission from the engine in free motion. Or did I forget to put the gear back on the kick starter shaft.:silly:

These engines don't have "primary kick start" which means the ability to kick start in gear (like a dirt bike). To use the kicker, make sure the bike is in neutral and kick away.

Thanks for calling me stupid. I never had a motorcycle before and never thought about how it worked, So any wise cracks toward me are pointless. Thank you to those that gave me good information. And to the guy that didnt, he can grow up. Give people a break. Were not all at the same level. Thank you

OK I'll try that again, a little nicer this time. Seriously, get an owners manual for your bike and a shop manual and sit down and read both of them thoroughly. If you have no idea how to kick-start your bike how do you plan on getting home if your battery goes dead when you are out cruising. I would also check into taking a motorcycle safety course before you do much street riding. Some insurance companies give you a break on your costs if you take a course too.

It also helps if you can hold the bike level while kick-starting the bike. This prevents the right two cylinders from starving while loading the left two cylinders. Thus making it easier to start...cold starts can be tricky to begin with until you learn the "sequence" of your own bike. Happy Riding"
