"my cam sprockets are diff. "...
Assuming you're speaking of the sprockets that attach to the camshafts, if the bolt holes are slotted or you have bolts all the way around the sprocket than these would be adjustable cam sprockets.
If you did not remove the sprockets off the cams than leave them alone unless you plan on CAM degreeing these in...
I wrote a tutorial on the process...
NOTE: Has some humor/language others find offensive... but the information provided is 100% accurate and does provide you everything you'll need in tools and formulations/step by step process to accomplish cam degreeing...

I'm thinking that you might have a modified engine.
Do you have the head off right now? If so,what's the cylinder bore size?
Got pics of those carbs?
Do you see any grinding marks around the shim bucket area?(clearance for bigger cams)
If you do,you probably have performance cams that have been degreed, like OMR mentioned.
More info and pics would really help...

If so,like OMR said...you'll have to get them re-degreed,or go back to a stock sprocket.
But going to the stock sprockets will limit the capability of those cams,if they're performance cams.
How do you know it was a piece of metal that did the damage?

on the cam chain tower there is rubber spacers with steel plates under them. one rubber and one steel plate was missing when i got the bike.
Yup...that would do it. :pinch:
Were the tower bolts(4 of them in total) still there?
More info needed,on those cams...any markings on them anywhere?
Check them out...check the ends of them for any stamps.
Pics for sure if you can...clear pics...

5 L on left of sprocket, and a R on rt side
on the end of the exhaust cam is 4 lines 2 vertical 2 horizontial. the intake cam has more lines.
