I had the same problem with backfiring out of the carbs and do you know what the solution was? After 6 freaking months, I found that it was the vaccume line from the petcock had come off the nipple and thus creating the backfire through the carbs.

Once I installed the vaccume line that bike ran like a million dollars.

Moral of the story, check the little stuff first before tearing the valve cover off. A lot of times it is something simple that you have overlooked.

Did you check to see if the vaccume line has any cracks, tears, or holes.

For $2.00 all of your troubles may go away.

got the new tires on it today. after a months worth of hard labor. i took it for its first ride. pure bliss :woohoo:

uh... yeah... that vacuum line was missing... forgot to put that back on. doh

that fixed most of the issue. it just pops a little bit. i still have to check the timing/carbs/valves.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS

I wonder if thats whats wrong with mine. It only does it when I first start it until it gets a little warmed up then it stops. I'm gonna go check for cracks right now.
Thanks

Hi KZ, Mine did the same thing as yours. My problem was dirt or rust in the carbs and the wrong pilots and main jets in them. If you have stock exhaust pipes and the stock air filter box, all you need is a good cleaning. It may be a little overwhelming, but it was for me also. It got easier after I got into them. Get a good manual and take your time, you can do it.Make sure you have a fuel filter in line after cleaning the carbs. Z1 Enterprises has all the parts you would need. A metric set of O-ring from Harbor Freight will help also. I had to put larger pilots and mains in mine, since I have a 4into 1 exhaust and pod filters. Good luck. Bob

Always been told if it backfires through carbs, ignition is advanced and if backfires out pipe, ignition timing is retarded. Anyone else heard this?
