Here is a bit of a different aproach, my brother has been driving his mint 74 XL250 on the highway to work an he found reving too high for his liking. So he replaced the rear sprocket with a 10 tooth smaller an a 1 tooth larger front sprocket. He now finds it cruses on the highway without the high revs an hassent lost any of its drivability.you might not need as a ratical tooth change on the 400, lower rpms = less vibs and easier on the engine Also a good oil change helps, oil now is so much better than it was years ago.
