You should be alright without welding it. If you plan on splitting the cases I would do it or if you plan on running a wide tire.

I bet he told his wife he wanted to ride his bike to work every day and to make it reliable he needed to spend a few bucks to rebuild it... 1075 kit/cams hehehe IF you have the engine out, weld the crank. ONLY certain types of people put a big bore kit and cams in a KZ and those people are the type who need to weld their crank. I have bent crank shafts in the past and it was from drag racing and missing a shift and over revving. Missing a shift can happen on the street pretty easy. This was on a Suzuki GS1100 (well it was 1260cc by then with cams, etc. This was needed because gas prices had gone up and I needed to make the bike reliable for daily riding... right honey???) hehe

My 1105 was built by Superbike Mike a prostock racer from years back in 1977 as a street motor for a buddy. He got into Harleys and gave it to me. Its been running for 31 years unwelded. That said if I did it myself I would weld it. I dont run it that hard but at times I beat the crap out of it. It still runs pretty good for an old dog

You would be able to get by without welding the crank as long as you don't abuse it. Having those parts doesn't necessarily hurt the crank but what you have to watch out for is if you are abusing it and the tire hooks. That is what will getcha! If you have the oppurtunity, get it welded just for insurance sakes. Doesn't cost much and once welded, you can stretch those cables ALOT, and it will be fine. I personally would weld it just to feel safe though. That's the first thing I do whenever I build a motor.

If I went to a big bore kit on my '84 1100 GPZ over the winter, I would go with the conventional wisdom and have the crank welded.
Need advice. With 30 thousand miles, the bike has been a good runner since new. Once, many years ago, I started it up from winter storage and from cold, it reved sky high until I could react and find the kill switch. Turned out the throttle cable somehow froze itself in the wide open position somewhere down close to the throttle butterflies. I was lucky 'cause it never seemed to effect anything but I was never comfortable knowing it happened. So, having said that, it seems just not enough to weld it.
Which outfit do you recommend me sending it to that will check the alignment first to make sure none of the cheeks are askew, and at the same time, check all the rollers? How about a complete blueprint, where I would send out all the new overbore pistons to be balanced with the crank after it is welded?
Thanks for any recommendations.

Falicon is probably best known for crank work. I think they are in Florida. I spent a bunch of money with them when I was young and stupid. I suspect there are folks right here on this site that could do this work... perhaps one of them will speak up. I don't know about blueprinting a street crank but its your money...

Yep, 'forgot about them. Thanx George. They even give a price list. To balance and weld is VERY reasonable. Even a full tilt crank is under a grand.
Googled for website. Great!

when in doubt always weld the crank!!

pierson, falicon, gary clark, will cost multiple hundreds and into the thousands if you get: rods, bead blasting, polishing , knife edging.. etc... cryogenic trating...

we have a shop locally that will reference and weld for $200.00.
