engine smoking was created by pinhead
Ok, I have a 1980 kz1000 limited that is smoking a lot out of the exhaust. I have replaced the rings and the head gasket and it still smokes. The valve seals are all new too. I cannot seem to figure out why it smokes. It is in the #4 cylinder. I have made sure the bottom triple ring is installed correctly. I have done a compression test and all have the same compression. I am lost at this point. Can someone help me.

It was smoking before rebuild. It is oil smoke (white). It could be oil still in exhaust. There is a lot in there. I just didn't know if that could cause that much. Should I see if I can clean that out or should I just run it down the road a little bit and see if it goes away. I really hate the thought of pulling the engine apart again.

Also, the #4 spark plug is getting oil fouled again. So I guess it's not just the oil in the exhaust. I guess I need to check the valve seals again. They looked good.

When you get the head off, make sure the head is not cracked between
the spark plug hole and the exhaust valve. (not always easy to see)
Make sure the head is not warped. (also not easy to see.)
Before you take it apart do a leak down test. That should tell witch
cylinder might be giving you a hard time.

Ok, I drove it up and down the road a few times and it was just oil in the exhaust left over from before. Problem fixed. Now to just get rid of a couple of oil leaks and I'll finally get to drive.

Are all the covers leaking? Mine did .I now use atv silicone on them. it works well. Easy to clean off later too. If your motor is black buy black silicone. Put it on sparingly; cut a small hole in the tip to apply it sparingly. Remember it will sqeese out a bit abd u can wipe it off. But what squeezes in stays in. u don’t want big gobs going through the motor. Both sides of the gasket. Then snug the bolts lightly until it dries then retighten them. Good to go.
ALSO
Retorque the head bolts 1 at a time(loosen 1 then retighten it) IN THE PROPER TORQUE SEQUENCE.
Good luck.B)

Before getting excited AFTER A TOP END REBUILD about smoke, let the rings seat in. When I assemble an engine, I generally use too much assembly lube and this takes a while to burn off as well. If it still smokes after 500 miles or so, then track down the reason.

Not to hijack, but what is the proper torque sequence for the valve cover?

Thanks

When I finished putting mine back together late one Sunday night, I fired it up and it was smoking like those old trucks that used to drive down the streets in Louisiana spraying that plume of DDT to kill all the mosquitos. We used to get on our bikes and ride through it....

The engine smoke cleared up after about five or ten minutes of running, but it was terrible at first.
