Do not use auto oil with the "Energy Star" on the bottle, that stuff MAY make your clutch slip. Once you get into the 10w-40 and thicker oils you don't see that Energy Star too much.

I use 15-40 automotive SJ all the time in everything I maintain. Goo out at 3,000 miles, a gallon in, with the filter. I add, using the sight gauge, as needed between changes, and at 43,000 miles, I don't see a need to change the routine. As far as the transmission is concered, a lot of car manufacturers used motor oil to lube the tranny, so Kawasaki Heavy Industries kind of followed suit. ATF would be a good choice to deal with clutch issues, but then you get into whether type F or Dexron in appropriate, plus then you might end up with a broken engine due to it's being used in a shared engine / tranny setup.
