I remembered that answer 20 years ago. But I have a KZ900 1976 specific only, right side cover made in Japan.
And the a left side cover that is made in the USA. Notice the 4 different holes that handled 2 different emblems. for a couple of dif. years.
Sorry for the scratch marks. That was from taking off the small emblem circle clamp pieces.
Plus was it a size thing with import & export 750cc above and below Japan could not keep any motorcycle above 750cc anything bigger was exported to USA & Europe. Thats why Jap made the Z2 - 750cc Z.

I moved the Z rod into it's new smaller garage, sitting next to it's fellow brotheren, Yes we can co-exist.
All motorcycles are created equal! Peace man, no nukes, save the wales etc. wtf about global warming? I'm freakin freezin! it's 0 freakin degrees! F
