Would you ship it? was created by GregZ
I have rarest of rare hand bent yoshimura pipe. It hangs low and has taken years of asphalt abuse. I would like to have it restored. I have spoke on phone with bruce at motocrosspiperepair and he tells me he can fix. Problem is I can't put it in a box and ship it 1800 miles away. I may never see the pipe again.
Should I ship it ,insure it tracking etc. Has anyone used his services?. I'm not sure about this

you sound as tho you put a pretty decent personal value on this pipe.
and ,it sounds as tho you would be heartbroken if it did not come back .
understandably.
so if you ship it i would pay the extra to insure it.
i believe that my father in law used that guy to repair the dg pipe off of his it175 just a little over a year ago and was pleased.
i texted him as soon as i saw your thread and haven't heard back yet as soon as i do i will let you know what his experience was .

Absolutely...I would not hesitate to ship...as long as it is properly packed. I have shipped valuables (motorcycle and otherwise) all over the world and as long as you are using a US carrier, you will have no issues.

Certainly, ship with insurance. Be sure and take plenty of pics for proof of what was shipped.

I would photo it well.

I would put a heavy duty wire tag will your info and attach it to the pipe.

If motocrosspiperepair is an expert on vintage pipes, have them comment by writing a letter on the rarity of the pipe and the fact that is obsolete.

I would also have them put a value on it that you both feel is fair.

I would present all the paper work at the time of ship and insure the item for amount. I would also have the shipper explain the in and outs to insurance, ask pointed questions about recovery if lost or damaged.

If you are that worried about shipping your piece of Pop's history, or it getting lost. Just UPS Next Day Air it. That way it won't be in their hands for more than a day or so. Ground UPS takes forever when you have something of great value or great personal attachment being shipped.

If it was me, I would pack it like it was a piece of glass, insure it for 800 dollars and Next Day Air that puppy!!!!

At least you could then sleep at night!!!!! Hey its only money.

I have had pipes with severe damage, took them to a muffler shop that also did custom bending. They had pipe expanders and other tools that made them as good as new. Might want to check first.
It is never out of sight and propably done quicker. Just a thought.

4theKZ makes the point that value needs to be established. If something should ever happen to the pipe the total value it is insured too has no meaning if market value has not been established. Very important IMO.

hey greg. im in the Hagerstown, Maryland area. several years ago I had a header that got dented pretty good. I took it to a local musical instrument sales and repair. they were able to fix the shape of the tube perfectly. I then sent it for ceramic coating. turned out awesome. check to see if any similar shops near you. if not, this is the place. Brass Note, 301-739-4940. give them a call. nice folks. tom

I take it you're in the Hagerstown, MD area. It's probably an hour+ drive, but Hayes Racing (301)396-4480 in Waldorf, MD does pipe repairs. My son crushed his CR-125 FMF platinum pipe 10 years ago. We took it to Hayes and picked up a pipe that looked brand new. It's a small one man shop and I know he's done hundreds of pipes over the years. Call before hand. You may be able to schedule an appointment and wait while he does the repairs.
